The Association and Glasgow Cups are won
It’s been a season dominated by Glasgow’s top two, Dave Butler and Tom Burns and tonight they shared out the Club’s top two cup trophies. Butler was successful in the Association Cup and Burns in the Glasgow Cup. This was Burns’ first club trophy for over 30 years but it is well deserved after a fine season.
The Glasgow Cup final was hard-fought, there being little between the two players. Burns took the lead in the first half but held it for less than two minutes. There was no further scoring in the second half, nor in extra-time but it was Burns who triumphed 2-1 on shots.
The two semi-finals of the Association Cup were closer than many had expected. Colin Berry led Tom Burns 1-0 at half-time but Burns came back to win 2-1. Dave Houston took Dave Butler to shots after a 1-1 draw and extra-time. Butler came through 2-0 on shots to set up another cup final with Burns.
Butler started the final well and took an early lead. It was only in the last five minutes of the first half that Burns got into the game and had a period of good pressure. In the second half Butler regained the upper hand and it was no surprise when he took a 2-0 lead. It looked like game over but a spectacular strike by Burns reduced the deficit to 2-1. But Butler was able to continue to dominate and retain possession thus denying Burns further opportunities. It was a deserved victory and gave Butler the League and Cup double.
One league match was played, Barry Corr defeating Dave Houston 2-0.
