Circuit Event 1 Arbroath

The first event of the Scottish Circuit took place in Arbroath on Sunday 12th October. Glasgow took six players to the event including Baver Bari. Bari is still signed for Hot Club but will transfer to Glasgow once the FISTF dissolution of HCE is complete. The competition was won by Greg Dand who defeated Gareth Christie in the final match. It was not a great day for Glasgow players. Best was Tom Burns who won his group to reach the semi finals only to lose to Gareth Christie and then Steve Bennett and thus gain 4th spot. Dave Butler, after an absence of two years from national competitions, found himself in the ‘group of death’ with Gareth Christie and Greg Dand. Butler lost narrowly to both and finished 3rd in the group. He then, surprisingly, lost on shots to Rob Conway and had to settle for 8th position. Baver Bari and John Halpin were drawn in the same group and finished 4th and 5th, Bari having secured a 1-0 victory over Halpin. Dave Gladman and Martin Phee were in the same group as Tom Burns and they too finished 4th and 5th. Gladman, complaining of sticky pitches, could manage only 3 draws and a 2-0 defeat to Tom Burns. Gladman went on to defeat Baver Bari to finish 10th with Bari 11th. Martin Phee played John Halpin for 13th spot, with Phee winning 1-0.

Club Night 5/10/14

After several nights playing friendlies to help familiarisation with the new rules, the new league season kicked off at last. Eight players attended but since it was Willie Fleming’s first night he was excused competitive matches.

Friendlies only for Fleming

Last season Dave Butler and Tom Burns fought out a very close battle for the title. Both played two matches this evening and both started with wins. Burns had a comfortable victory over Baver Bari whilst Dave Butler had to work hard for a win against Dave Gladman with Butler scoring the only goal of the game. The two rivals then played each other in a tense competitive match. Both created chances to score. Burns even had the ball in the net but his strike was ruled out, the referee deciding that his shooting figure had touched a defender before connecting with the ball. Neither player dominated the match and both agreed that the no-scoring draw was a fair result.

Title contenders Butler and Burns

Baver Bari also played two matches and unfortunately for him he lost his second match as well. He was level 1-1 at half-time with Colin Day but lost a further two goals in the second half to the experienced campaigner and founder member.

Day opens his campaign with a win

History was made in John Halpin’s match against Martin Phee. Halpin recorded his first ever league win with a 2-1 victory. Last season Halpin had 2 draws and 22 defeats in his league matches. This season promises to be much better! Sadly the camera did not record this historic victory but below is a picture of Halpin playing Willie Fleming.

A night to remember for Halpin

Perth International Open

The Perth IO took place over the weekend 14-15 June and was attended by players from Scotland, England and Malaysia.

It was a tough day for Colin Day who, suffering from neck and back pain, found himself in a group along with Greg Dand and Gareth Christie. Needless to say, Day lost heavily to both. Tom Burns and John Halpin were drawn in the same group along with Steve Bennett, Rob Conway and Martin Campbell. Burns lost 2-0 to Bennett but won his other three games to qualify in second place. Despite good performances, Halpin failed to win and did not progress. Tom Burns then played in the barrage and had a resounding 4-0 victory over Scott Fleming. In the other barrage game Gareth Christie squeezed through by a 3-2 margin against London’s Colin Tarry. Both semi-finals were closely fought, Burns losing 1-0 to Dand and Christie defeating Bennett 2-1. In the final Christie opened the scoring only to be pegged back by Dand but it was Christie who secured the title with a late goal.

The team event on the following day was a very low key affair and GTSA  finished third behind Tayside A and B teams.

The organisers were delighted that the event was attended by former subbuteo giant Mike Dent who now lives in Malaysia. Dent, originally from Blairgowrie, represented England at the 1976 Europa Cup in Malta. He went on to win that trophy beating Englishman Norman Gleave in the final. Our own Dave Houston represented Scotland at that tournament.

Gibraltar International Open

Dave Gladman travelled to Gibraltar to take part in its International Open on the weekend of 24-25 May. The event took place at Gibraltar TSA’s own premises where 6 tables are permanently set up. On the Saturday, the Team event, won by Gibraltar’s A team was followed by the Veterans’ competition. In his first match Gladman recorded perhaps his best result in European competition, a 1-0 victory over Luis Mendez of Spain. This was followed by another good result, a 1-1 draw with Jason Cano. Gladman, therefore, went into his final group match needing only a draw to qualify. Unfortunately he crashed 0-3 to Jose Bonavia. The competition was won by Antonio Montano who defeated John Field 4-0 in the final.

On the Sunday it was the Open Event. For Gladman a 0-4 defeat to Ferran Coll was followed by a worse 0-6 defeat to John Field. There was some consolation in a 1-0 victory over Jose Bonavia in Gladman’s third match. But there was to be no consolation in the Consolation event where Gladman lost 1-0 on shots to Lawrence Alvarez after a 1-1 draw. Antonio Montano made it a double by winning 2-1 in the final against Jason Cano.

Gibraltar TSA very kindly awarded Gladman the Fair Play Trophy. Many thanks to John Field and all the players for their hospitality at this well organised event.

Club night 19/5/14

Only three competitive matches were played. In the league Dave Houston played out a 1-1 draw with Colin Berry. Berry therefore moves above Baver Bari in the table. In the Association Cup quarter-final Colin Day edged out Ronnie McKenzie 2-1. Day now plays Dave Butler in the semi-final. In the Woodend Handicap Cup first round replay, Willie Fleming managed to claw back his one-goal handicap against Dave Houston to take the game to extra-time. The first half had been fairly even but Fleming dominated the second, deserving his goal. Houston came back into the game in extra-time but neither player was able to break the deadlock. Houston, however, triumphed, winning 2-1 on shots, both his goals coming from the wide shots. Houston will now play Burns in the quarter-final.

Mallorca Grand Prix

Tom Burns and Dave Gladman became the first Glasgow players to take part in the Mallorca Grand Prix. The tournament took place over the weekend of 10/11 May but the Glasgow pair played in the Veteran category on the Saturday. Unfortunately neither player managed to qualify out of the group. Gladman had a win (1-0) and two defeats (0-2 and 0-5) to finish third whilst Burns had one draw (2-2) and two defeats (0-5 and 0-3) to finish fourth. Both players reached the quarter-finals of the ‘Consolation’, Gladman courtesy of a bye and Burns after a win on shots. Gladman then lost 0-3 and Burns 0-1.

Circuit Event 3 at Abernethy

The final Scottish Circuit Event took place on Sunday 4th May at the Jamesfield Garden Centre, Abernethy. It was 1,2, 3 for Tayside with Steve Bennett, Gareth Christie and Scott Fleming finishing in the top three places. Highest finisher for Glasgow was Dave Gladman in 4th whilst Tom Burns was 5th. This meant that Steve Bennett was crowned Scottish Champion with Gareth Christie second and Tom Burns third.

Club night 28/4/14

Only two league matches were played, both involving Ronnie McKenzie and both ending in draws. Baver Bari and Dave Gladman were the players with whom he shared the points.

Two matches were played in the Woodend Handicap Cup. McKenzie pulled back a 3-goal deficit to draw with John Halpin. Colin Day started two goals behind Colin Berry but could only manage one goal. Berry joins Gladman in the semi-finals.

Club night 14/4/14

Only one competitive match was played this evening – the Glasgow Cup semi-final between Tom Burns and Colin Day. Day started the match well and was on the front foot for the first two or three minutes. Then Burns took over and completely dominated the first half but when the whistle sounded for half-time he had only one goal to show for this domination. That goal resulted from Day’s spare goalkeeper giving away possession. After Burns went ahead by two goals in the second half, few would have anticipated the comeback that was to come. Both Day’s second half goals came after poor defensive flicks by his opponent created openings which Day ruthlessly exploited. Burns, however, really should have put this game to bed. With this thought at the back of his mind, will Burns performance be affected in the replay?

Burns 2 2 Day

Six players took part in a four round Swiss system competition. This was won by Baver Bari with wins over Martin Phee and John Halpin and draws with Dave Gladman and Colin Day. Tom Burns was runner-up.

A ruling was also passed on the abandoned Association Cup semi-final between Tom Burns and Willie Fleming. The match will be replayed from half-time with Fleming ahead by one goal.
