Glasgow IO: review and pictures

Review

For the most part it was a case of what might have been for Glasgow players in this competition. Arguably best performance over the weekend was by Barry Corr. In the Open he won both his group matches including victory over improving seed Ben Staples to qualify for the quarter-finals. There he lost by only a single goal to eventual winner Gareth Christie. Then on the Sunday he led Glasgow’s B team to semi-final qualification. An fine performance saw him defeat Yorkshire’s Paul Lawrenson 4-1. It was an excellent response to the decision to promote Dave Houston to the A team ahead of Corr. For Tom Burns a draw against Gareth Christie would have seen him go straight to the quarter-finals to play Barry Corr. As it was he narrowly went down to the Taysider after leading and then surprisingly lost in the barrage to Ben Staples. Colin Berry also made it to the barrage but lost heavily to Mark Farrell. Baver Bari also reached the quarter-finals, finishing behind Steve Bennett in the group. Bari also lost but made a good fist of it against Rob Ramsey.

In the veterans Dave Gladman made the quarter-finals at the expense of Colin Day. Day beat Gladman in the group but then, remarkably, lost to Rob Conway whom Gladman had beaten 5-0. Gladman lost his quarter-final to Mike Parnaby after performing creditably in the 1-0 defeat. John Halpin competed well in all his matches. He continues to improve and will have gained much experience from the tournament. Congratulations to Colin Day who was the only Glasgow player to receive a trophy, finishing runner-up in the Plate. He lost 3-2 on shots to Russ Harker. This shoot-out will be remembered for one of the worst shots in competitive subbuteo history when Day’s central shot failed to even reach the Harker penalty box.

Glasgow B play Tayside A in the semi-final

The biggest disappointment was the failure of Glasgow A to qualify for the semi-finals. A draw with 3-man NETFA saw them go out on goal difference. This might have been avoided if the following hadn’t occurred: Dave Gladman losing to Dave Baxter, Tom Burns losing a 2-goal lead to Scott Fleming, Dave Houston failing to beat Connor Bowden, Dave Gladman not converting possession into goals against Ben Staples and Tom Burns not hanging on to his lead against Rob Ramsey. It should also be said that the team were without Dave Butler and Willie Fleming, two of the club’s top players.  It was a success story for the B team, however,  and congratulations to Barry Corr, Ronnie McKenzie, John Halpin and Fraser McKenzie. They lost to Tayside A in the semi-finals but the margin of defeat against them was less than that of the Glasgow A team. This will ensure that Glasgow B remain in the top 100 ranking.

We can say, however, that the tournament was a success and enjoyed by all participants. Congratulations to the worthy winners in all categories! We thank all the players who took part and we very much appreciate the kind comments we have received. Full results are available in the Glasgow IO page on this website.

Club night 24/2/14

With neither of the top two playing tonight, focus was on the contest for third, fourth and fifth places. Colin Day is nine points clear in third place but he suffered a set-back after losing 2-1 to Dave Gladman. Day took an early lead and had the better of the first half but Gladman managed to equalise before the interval. Gladman had much more of the ball after the break and took an early second half lead in this hotly contested encounter. Day passed up a late opportunity to equalise. With a large gap in the Gladman defence to move into, Day’s figure somehow stopped short of the ball. Willie Fleming’s hopes were also dented when he lost 1-0 to Colin Berry but he did have wins over Baver Bari and Dave Houston despite not playing at his best. Ten points behind but with four games in hand, Gladman looks best placed to catch Day. Three of these games, however, are against Fleming, Dave Butler and Ronnie McKenzie. Colin Berry, after his fine display against Willie Fleming, was disappointed to lose heavily to Bari. Bari, still signed with Hot Club, has improved much since playing in the Glasgow League.

Association Cup

One first round match took place with Dave Houston progressing to the quarter final at the expense of Martin Phee. Houston led 2-0 at half-time his second goal being a superb acute angled drive. Phee’s defensive figure seemed to have the shot covered but Houston was able to meet the ball cleanly and, much to Phee’s surprise and chagrin, shoot into the far corner of the net. Phee scored early in the second half to get back into the game and late on missed a glorious opportunity to level. Houston’s spare goalkeeper had missed the ball and Phee, with an open goal gaping, somehow contrived to shoot wide.

Association Cup – Quarter Final Draw

Dave Houston joined Baver Bari, Ronnie McKenzie, Colin Berry and Tom Burns in the quarter final draw after a 2-1 win over Martin Phee. Three other first round ties are yet to be decided. Dave Gladman and Dave Butler will replay after drawing 1-1.

The Draw:

McKenzie v Corr/Day
Gladman/Butler v Berry
Bari v Fleming/Andreoni

Glasgow International Open

This weekend GTSA stages the second Scottish international tournament of the season. We extend a warm welcome to all our competitors who have said YES to sharing what we hope will be an enjoyable and exciting weekend. We look forward to many Bank of England pounds giving an economic boost to our pubs and curry houses!

In the Open category Steve Bennett of Tayside may start favourite but he will have strong competition from Bristol’s Paulo Gouviea, Yorkshire’s Mark Farrell and fellow Taysider Gareth Christie. In the Veteran category it is difficult to see any  winner other than Daniel Scheen but Mike Parnaby, Malcolm Lees and Brian Daley may argue with that. It promises to be a very competitive Team event where perhaps five of the seven teams have realistic expectations of glory.

GTSA will give regular Twitter updates over the weekend and full results will be published on this website.

Fewer than half of our entries are with Scottish clubs and that is a little disappointing. It is interesting that Scots and Greeks, who share St Andrew as a patron saint, also share a masochistic tendency to fight amongst themselves. Small nations can ill afford to allow this to happen.

Club night 17/2/14

Dave Butler moved to within three points of Tom Burns after winning potentially difficult matches against Andrea Andreoni and Ronnie McKenzie. Colin Day consolidated third position also with a win over McKenzie. Dave Gladman moved above Willie Fleming after edging out Baver Bari in a very close encounter. Andreoni went on to gather six points with single goal victories over John Halpin and Martin Phee. Halpin has become increasingly competitive in the last few weeks and has been unlucky not to increase his points total. Phee, with a little bit more composure, could have achieved a better result against the Italian.

Two cup matches also took place. In the Glasgow Cup, the first match in Group 4 saw Ronnie McKenzie beat Baver Bari 3-1. Barry Corr is yet to play. In the Association Cup Butler and Gladman will have to play again. After a goal-less first half Butler scored first but could only hold his lead for two minutes, a poor block flick giving Gladman the space to score.

Club night 10/2/14

Tonight saw the end of Colin Day’s impressive unbeaten league run. In his first match of the evening Day was losing 1-0 at half-time to Baver Bari. He came back in the second half to level at 1-1 and thus extend the unbeaten record to 22 games. Willie Fleming was to be Day’s undoing. Fleming won by 2 goals to nil though some controversy surrounded Fleming’s opening goal after a ball had been replaced by the referee. Fleming, however, did merit the victory. Fleming did lose to Dave Gladman, the two players battling it out for fourth place. This was Gladman’s first match using his new ‘snake’ bases and he went on to win well against Colin Berry. Both Tom Burns and Dave Butler recorded victories so there was no change involving the top two. Butler had to rely on two second half goals to overcome an improving John Halpin. Day’s single point from the evening means that he will probably have to settle for third place.

Club night 3/2/14

Only five matches were played this evening with the leading three players gaining maximum points. The gap between first and second remains nine points but Colin Day moved three points closer to Tom Burns. Burns’ direct approach was once again good enough to defeat Dave Gladman who also, once again, was unable to convert possession into goals. Colin Day had to work hard to overcome Dave Houston, a late winner keeping him on course for the runner-up spot. Houston and Gladman fought out a midfield battle where attempts on goal were few and far between whilst Dave Butler had a comfortable win over Martin Phee.

Malta International Open

On January 24th Dave Gladman flew south to take part in the Malta International Open. It was an opportunity to escape Scottish January weather for a few days but although Malta was a bit warmer, it was no less wet or windy.

The tournament was hosted by Valletta Lions TFC.

The venue, the 12th May Band Club in Haz Zebbug

The team event took place on the Saturday and was won by Valletta Subbuteo Club who beat Valletta Lions in the final.

Gladman did not have great expectations in the the tournament as the standard of play is a step up from that in Scotland. Add to that he is still recovering from a broken finger. First up was a match against John Zammit. Gladman was three goals down after only a few minutes. Fortunately an impending slaughter did not materialise and he managed to keep the score to five. A better result was achieved against Joe Mifsud, this time a 3-1 defeat after trailing 2-1 at half-time. In his final match Gladman managed to double his number of goals scored but went down 6-1. Astonishingly, in this game he equalised and had an opportunity to go 2-1 ahead. But then it was backs to the wall.

Against Adrian Bonnici

The Veterans competition was won by Charles Aquilina who defeated Jason Pisani on shots in the final. Derek Conti beat Samuel Bartolo 2-1 to win the Open title.

Many thanks to Valletta Lions and indeed all the Maltese players for their hospitality, friendliness and enjoyable tournament!

Club night 27/1/14

Dave Butler moved into second place and a step closer to retaining the Championship with seven points tonight. He is nine points behind Tom Burns with five games in hand. Colin Day is five points adrift of Butler with the same number of games played. Willie Fleming’s draw with Butler keeps the challengers’ title hopes just alive. Burns had a convincing win over Dave Houston but the latter’s victory over Baver Bari kept him in sixth place ahead of Ronnie McKenzie.

Club night 20/1/14

A relatively poor turnout saw only five league and one cup match played. In the Glasgow Cup Dave Butler beat Dave Gladman 2-0 to qualify for the quarter finals. Colin Day wins the group, however, by virtue of scoring one more goal than Butler.

Craig Lynch had made the trip from Edinburgh and gained 3 points from a possible 9. He lost 2-0 to Willie Fleming, both goals coming in the first half. Lynch led Colin Day at half-time but Day extended his unbeaten league run to 19 games with three second half goals. Lynch had better luck against the improving John Halpin, winning by the only goal of the game. Fleming continued his good run, his two wins moving him into fourth place. Colin Berry had the misfortune to play both Fleming and Butler. Although holding Butler at half-time, he suffered a second half collapse.
